In state fiscal year 2019, the Department of Human Services provided services to 1.7 million Minnesotans, 30% of the state’s population. Services include basic economic supports for food and housing, health care, protection for children and vulnerable adults, and programs for older adults and people with disabilities. Who we served during state fiscal year (SFY) 2019

Term	Definition
State fiscal year	State fiscal year runs from July 1 to June 30.
Minnesotans served	Unique number of people receiving a program, service or resource from the Minnesota Department of Human Services.
Money spent	Refers to expenditures for all of the Minnesota Department of Human Services programs, resources or services during a particular fiscal year.

Term	Definition
Age groups	Age categories are determined from the person's age as of the end of the fiscal year. Children/young adults: younger than 22 years Adults: 22 to 64 years Older adults: 65 and older
Disability status	Disability status is determined using eligibility for health, food and cash assistance based on an identified disability or based on the recipient having a medically diagnosed disability.

Number of programs or services	Unique count of programs and services for each recipient. MFIP is split into the three components and each component is considered a different program or resource

Term	Definition
Employment and income stability	Employment and Income stability refers to programs and services that help Minnesotans develop their financial independence and security. This includes programs such as General Assistance, Minnesota Supplemental Assistance, Emergency Assistance and cash through the Minnesota Family Investment Program.
Food and nutrition	Food and Nutrition refers to resources that help Minnesotans have consistent access to healthy food. This includes the Minnesota Supplemental Nutrition Program (SNAP) and individuals who receive SNAP benefits through the Minnesota Family Investment Program.
Health and well-being	Health and well-being refers to resources that help Minnesotans access quality physical and mental health resources in order to sustain and promote healthy, supportive lifestyles. This includes Medicaid, MinnesotaCare, Children and Adult mental health programs, long-term waiver programs, and chemical dependency treatment.
Housing	Housing refers to resources that help Minnesotans obtain and sustain affordable housing. This includes supportive housing and housing support received through the Minnesota Family Investment Program.
Safety and inclusion	Safety and inclusion refers to resources that help the most vulnerable Minnesotans remain safe in their communities and protect against abuse and maltreatment. This includes Child and Adult maltreatment, Parent Support Outreach and Child and Adult general welfare services.
