Certified Recovery Residences

Recovery Residences

A recovery residence is a community-based living environment—such as a cooperative home, room and board residence, apartment, or similar housing—that provides temporary, substance-free housing for individuals recovering from substance use disorders. These residences offer a safe, healthy, and family-like setting that promotes sustained recovery, require residents to abstain from alcohol and illicit or non-prescribed substances, and charges a fee for housing. Recovery residences do not provide formal counseling or treatment services but instead provide a person-centered supportive living environment while adhering to established sober living guidelines, including those published by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Recovery Residence certification process

Certification through DHS is voluntary; however, Level 2 certification is mandatory if your residence intends to enter into a Housing Support Program agreement with DHS. The certification process through BHA will consist of a series of steps involving policy reviews for each residence and a site review by a BHA certification specialist.
