Indication

AzaSite (azithromycin) is indicated for the treatment of bacterial conjunctivitis caused by susceptible isolates of the following microorganisms:

  • CDC coryneform group G*
  • Haemophilus influenzae
  • Staphylococcus aureus
  • Streptococcus mitis group
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae

*Efficacy for this organism was studied in fewer than 10 infections.

Summary

AzaSite is the first macrolide ophthalmic antibiotic for bacterial conjunctivitis. It is more effective than placebo (63% vs. 50%, AzaSite and placebo, respectively) under clinical trial conditions. It is not clear that this drug is any more effective than other therapies also used for bacterial conjunctivitis.

Criteria

Patient has bacterial conjunctivitis and has had failure or intolerance to at least two generically available ophthalmic antibiotics.

Ciprofloxacin $3.45 per 5 mL bottle
Sulfacetamide sodium 10% op solution $4 per bottle
Polymyxin B sul-trimethoprim $4 per bottle
