Healthier, longer lives for people with mental illness

Minnesota 10x10 page (pdf)
Minnesota 10x10 report (pdf)

Findings from a number of recent national studies indicate that adults with a serious and persistent mental illness are dying, on average, 25 years earlier than the general public. The leading causes of these premature deaths are heart disease, lung disease, diabetes and cancer.

  • People with Bipolar Affective Disorder lost an average of 30 years of life and died from unintentional injuries, cardiovascular disease and suicide.
  • People with Schizophrenia died an average of 17 years earlier and died from cancer, heart disease, and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
  • People with Schizoaffective Disorder lost an average of 24 years of life and died from 1. Heart disease, 2. Cancer, and 3. Unintentional injuries and COPD (tie)
  • People with Bipolar Affective Disorder have a higher rate of Substance Use Disorder 55% compared to 11% of comparison group without SMI and 26% rate for people with Schizophrenia. This likely contributed to higher unintentional injuries and suicide rate and younger age of death.
  • Approximately 1 in 4 (or 25%) of adults in the U.S. have some form of mental illness or substance use disorder, and these adults consume almost 40% of all cigarettes smoked by adults. (CDC https://www.cdc.gov/tobacco/disparities/mental-illness-substance-use/index.htm)
  • Tobacco use is a major contributor to early death for all sub-groups:
US Smoking Prevalence: 63.6% Substance use disorder, 45.1% Affective disorder, 40.1% Any mental illness, 37.80% Anxiety disorder, 21.3% No mental disorder - Source: American Lung Association

Taking action: Minnesota 10 by 10

Between 2011 and 2012, a group of public and private professionals and payers met to develop an initiative to improve the average lifespan of Minnesotans with serious mental illness. The goal of the initiative was to increase the average lifespan of Minnesotans with Bipolar Disorder or Schizophrenia by 10 years within 10 years. We refer to this initiative as the MN 10 by 10. The initiative has developed a form that consumers, family members and providers can use as an informational tool within the health care setting.

Clinician tool

One of the basic reasons for premature death among persons with bipolar disorder or schizophrenia is that very few routinely see their primary care physicians for annual physical health screenings. Yet with regular screening, these diseases can often be prevented by lifestyle changes or can be detected early so treatment can control these health conditions.

The 10x10 screening tool (PDF) provides:

  • Information for the patient about leading a healthier and longer life
  • A list of preventive screenings that primary care physicians should do annually
  • A way for the patient to track health results
  • A place to list people the patient wants to share their health results with, along with any instructions or treatment recommendations made by the primary care physician.
