Approval criteria

  • Patient is being treated for acute pain AND
  • Patient has previously failed treatment with each of the following opiates as single therapy or as part of a combination or has an allergy or intolerance to these opiates/opiate combinations: oxycodone immediate release, morphine immediate release, and hydrocodone immediate release

Quantity limits

One fill is allowed.

Background information

Nucynta is an opioid analgesic indicated for the relief of moderate to severe acute pain in patients 18 years of age or older.  

Tapentadol is a mu-opioid agonist and is a Schedule II controlled substance. Such drugs are sought by drug abusers and people with addiction disorders. Nucynta can be abused in a manner similar to other opioid agonists, legal or illicit. Nucynta may be abused by crushing, chewing, snorting or injecting the product.
