Determining if you have a disability

If you have a disability or are blind, you may quality for certain heath care programs or services specifically designed to help people with disabilities. The rules for qualifying for these programs are different than other programs. Information below explains what is required to qualify as a person with a disability or who is blind.

What do I need to show that I have a disability or am blind?
For Minnesota Health Care Programs, you are considered blind or disabled when you receive Retirement, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (RSDI), Social Security Disability (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) due to blindness or a disability.

If you do not get any of these benefits, you can:
- Apply for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration (SSA)
- Have the State Medical Review Team assess your disability
How do I contact the State Medical Review Team (SMRT) for a disability determination?
You do not need to contact SMRT. Your county or tribal worker will submit a referral to SMRT. When SMRT receives the referral, they will:
1. Send you all the necessary forms
2. Contact you during the process
3. Send you and the county or tribal worker a letter once a decision is made
