Household Size

The first step to finding out if your household income is within the limits for Behavioral Health Fund eligibility is to establish your household size.

  • Determine which category you (the applicant) are in:
    • I am an adult (18 years of age or older)
    • I am a minor (under 18 years of age) and a parent or guardian is applying on my behalf
    • I am a minor giving effective consent (Minnesota law allows minors to consent to substance use disorder treatment)

Minnesota Statutes 144.343

  • For adults count each of the following people living in the same home/dwelling:
    • Yourself
    • Your spouse
    • Your minor-aged children, your spouse’s minor-aged children

  • For minors count each the following people living in the same home/dwelling:
    • Yourself
    • Your parents (birth or adoptive)
    • Your minor-aged siblings

  • For minors giving effective consent count each the following people living in the same home/dwelling:
    • Yourself
  • Special considerations for household size:
    • For each currently pregnant household member, add one (+1) to your household size
    • When counting household members, include anyone in out-of-home placement if someone in the household is contributing to the cost of that placement
