MinnesotaCare Premiums

After MinnesotaCare is approved, you will get a premium invoice in the mail. It will tell you exactly how much you must pay.

The MinnesotaCare Premium Estimator Table (PDF) can help you estimate your premium amount. The exact amount depends on your income, family size and number of people covered.

If you have MinnesotaCare, the premium invoice you get in November and December may show a premium amount of “unknown” instead of a dollar amount. This happens when your MinnesotaCare coverage needs to be renewed and we have not processed or received your renewal form. You can pay your premium:

• Online at https://payments.dhs.state.mn.us:
  Select MinnesotaCare from the menu. You will need your case number, the invoice number and the amount of your premium. You can pay by credit card (VISA or MasterCard) or electronic withdrawl from a checking account.
  
  
• By phone at 800-657-3672, option 1 for enrolled, option 1 again to make a payment:
  You will need your case number, the invoice number and amount of your premium. You can pay by credit card, debit card (VISA or MasterCard) or electronic withdrawal from a checking account.
  
  
• By mail:
  Allow enough time for your payment to arrive by the due date on your premium invoice. You can pay by check or money order. Do not mail cash. Write your case number on your check or money order and mail your payment with the payment stub from your premium invoice to this address:

• In person in St. Paul:
  Pay your premium at the MinnesotaCare office in downtown St. Paul (DHS-4020) (PDF). You can pay by cash, check or money order. If you pay by cash, you must have the exact amount.
  
  County offices do not take MinnesotaCare premium payments.

We must get your premium payment by noon on the last business day of the month for your coverage to start on the first day of the next month.

DHS must receive payments made online, by telephone or mail by noon on the last business day of the month to guarantee coverage for the following month. Payments received after 5:00 p.m. or on holidays or weekends will be credited the following business day.

Ongoing monthly premiums are due about the 15th of the month. Your premium invoice will have a due date.

Payments received Monday through Friday before 5:00 p.m., excluding holidays, will be credited on the same business day with the exception of the last business day of the month. Payments made by telephone or online must be made by noon on the last business day of the month to guarantee coverage for the following month. Payments made after 5:00 p.m. or on holidays or weekends will be credited the next business day.

You will have coverage for one more month if you do not pay your premium. That is a grace month. You must pay your monthly premium by noon on the last working day of the grace month to avoid a gap in coverage. Your coverage will end if you do not pay your premium by noon on the last business day of the grace month.

Payments made online, by telephone or mail that are received after 5:00 p.m. or on holidays or weekends will be credited the next business day.

You must pay the grace month premium and a premium for a future month to get coverage again. This means you must pay for two months of premiums to restart coverage. Your coverage starts again on the first day of the month after we get the total amount due. We will forgive your unpaid grace month premium if you are still not covered when we bill you for the fourth month after the grace month. The forgiven grace month premium will no longer appear on your MinnesotaCare premium invoices once it is forgiven. You must pay for a future month of coverage to restart your coverage after your grace month premium is forgiven.

No, the following people do not pay a monthly premium:

• Children under the age of 21.
• Households with a member who is an American Indian or Alaska Native and enrolled in MinnesotaCare.
• Members of the military who become eligible for MinnesotaCare within 24 months after completing active duty, and their households. These MinnesotaCare members do not pay premiums for 12 months.
• Effective through December 31, 2025, people in a household that has a combined annual income less than 160 percent of the federal poverty limit.
