Volunteer opportunities and unpaid student experiences

Volunteers are always needed and welcome at the Forensic Mental Health Program in St. Peter.

The Forensic Mental Health Program serves:

• People who have been civilly committed, under Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 253B, as mentally ill and dangerous or as a person with developmental disabilities or a related condition who presents a public safety risk.
  
• People with mental illness who have been court-ordered for evaluation and treatment, under Minnesota Rules of Criminal Procedure, 20.01 and 20.02, before the start of a criminal trial.

Volunteer opportunities

Volunteer opportunities at the Forensic Mental Health Program include:

• Processing donations for the Trading Post Thrift Store
• Conducting tours and processing donations at the St. Peter State Hospital Museum
• Completing light clerical work
• Assisting with hobby and interest-area programs for patients
• Helping with special events
• Serving as a liaison to the Volunteer Council

All volunteers work through the Volunteer Services Department. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older. Background checks are required. Orientation and annual training are provided.

Unpaid student experiences

Unpaid students are able to earn academic credit or complete required clinical experiences at the Forensic Mental Health Program. For an application, contact the volunteer services coordinator at 507-985-2249.
