PCA Steps for Success workshop

Steps for Success is a three-day workshop offered to personal care assistant (PCA) agency staff to meet the PCA agency provider training requirements when enrolling or maintaining enrollment with Minnesota Health Care Programs (MHCP). MHCP provides these training sessions to agency staff via webinar.

Steps for Success is required for the following individuals of non-Medicare-certified PCA provider organizations:

Owners (directly or indirectly involved in the day-to-day operations of the PCA business)
Managing employees (directly or indirectly involved in the day-to-day operations of the PCA business)

Participants who wish to attend the PCA Steps for Success workshop must pass the PCA qualified professional test before registering for a PCA Steps for Success workshop.

Participants must attend all three days and be in attendance from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day to receive a Steps for Success certificate.

We will send an email with the link to join the online training the week before the start date of the workshop. If you do not receive this email, call the MHCP Provider Resource Center. Do not wait until the start of class to verify you received the email as you may not receive a link to the workshop at that time and will not get a certificate for attending. A certificate is needed to enroll your agency with MHCP.

Qualified Professionals (QP) can also manage employees or be owners of the agency. These QPs must be disclosed on DHS-5259 (PDF) during enrollment.

If a QP is listed on the DHS 5259, the QP needs to take the PCA qualified professional test and then register to attend the Steps for Success Workshop.

If a QP is not listed on the DHS 5259, the QP only needs to take the PCA qualified professional test to receive a certificate. The QP must meet the requirements on the PCA qualified professional criteria webpage for employment at a PCA agency.

Dates, location and webinar details
MHCP will schedule additional dates as they become available. After a workshop session fills, MHCP will remove it as a selection from the online registration system. Unfilled workshop sessions close at 8 a.m. seven business days before the workshop to ensure processing of all payments. The PCA Steps for Success workshop will be online only.

Webinar information
Participants will:
- Connect to the webinar from their own computers and do not need special hardware or software
- Communicate with the presenters and others in the audience using the chat feature available as part of the webinar
Participants need the following to attend the webinar sessions:
- Internet access
- Speakers or a headset
If the person receiving the email is unable to participate in the webinar, that person must forward their email invitation to the person attending in their place. Instruct the person who will be attending to use the original name and email address the invitation was sent to when logging into the session.

Documentation of completion

MHCP provides a certificate of completion for the full three-day PCA Steps for Success workshop. If a provider only attends day 1 of the PCA Steps for Success workshop, the only certificate that will be given is the Qualified Professional certificate.

We send the certificates to the email address of the contact person entered at the time of registration. Please allow up to two months for certificates to be sent. We will post a message on the MHCP provider news and updates webpage when the certificates are sent.

Agencies are responsible for retaining a copy of the certificate for their records. MHCP will not reproduce lost certificates.
Registration and cost

Register online. The cost is $95 per person.

When registering for this class, you will select Community First Services and Supports (CFSS) as the service. The training drop down will allow you to select CFSS Steps for Success.

You will be prompted to pay during the registration process. PCA provider agencies must register and pay for each participant to attend (owners, managers or supervising employees). You must wait for the person’s name to display in the drop-down information for the agency to ensure the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) has processed the person’s information to the PCA agency record on file. If DHS does not receive payment for each person during registration, the person will not be registered.

Review your registration information carefully and record the email address used at the time of registration.

Refunds will not be issued. Registrants unable to attend may send another owner, managing employee or QP in their place.

After you have paid and registered, we will send an email invitation the week before the training date containing the Webinar links to attend the trainings.
