Health care coverage for people age 19 or 20

The income limit depends on your family size and the health care program you qualify for. We may count your parents' income if they claim you as a tax dependent. This is true even if you do not live with them or are temporarily away at college.

If your income is too high for MA, you may be eligible for a spenddown (PDF). A spenddown is like an insurance deductible. You pay for part of your medical expenses and MA pays the rest.

There is no asset limit. Assets are items like cars, checking and savings accounts, your home and financial investments.

There is no cost for coverage for people under age 21.

Depending on which program you qualify for, your coverage may:

• Start the first day of the month that we get your application
• Go back up to three months prior to the month we get your application
• Start the month after you are approved, or pay your first premium if you have one.

You may still qualify. You must tell us if you have other health insurance or could get coverage through an employer or military service. Sometimes we can pay the cost of the other insurance so you can keep that coverage.

You can apply if you live on your own or if you live with one or both parents. You do not need your parents' permission to apply.

You may qualify for only family planning services coverage.

You may also qualify for an advanced premium tax credit through Minnesota's health insurance marketplace, MNsure. The tax credit helps pay part or all of your health care premium. Even if you do not qualify for the tax credit, you can compare options and buy affordable insurance. You cannot be denied coverage if you have a pre-existing condition.
