Therapeutic area - topical antifungal

FDA approved indication

Fungal skin infections, including Tinea pedis, tinea cruris, and tinea corporis, which are caused by Trichophyton species or Epidermophyton floccosum

Criteria

The patient has been diagnosed with a topical fungal infection and has used terbinafine or another generic first line antifungal, such as clotrimazole, consistently without benefit.

Rationale

Naftin, (naftifine) is a synthetic topical antifungal, which is in the same class of topical antifungals as terbinafine. Naftin is indicated for fungal skin infections. Other first line antifungals are available as generic formulations and cost about 10% of the cost of Naftin.

Naftin Pricing: Cream $2.30 - $2.80/gram; Gel $2.80-$3.30/gram; tube sizes 30, 60 and 90 grams

Ketoconazole, clotrimazole, itraconazole, terbinafine, and naftifine, are active in vitro against Trichophyton and E. floccosum.
