    Therapeutic area - Oral Antibiotic (amoxicillin)

    FDA approved indication

    Indicated for the treatment of tonsillitis and/or pharyngitis secondary to Streptococcus pyogenes in adults and pediatric patients.

    Criteria

    • Patient has tonsillitis and/or pharyngitis secondary to Streptococcus pyogenes, and microbe has been verified by laboratory testing AND
    • Has had failure on at least one other antibiotic

    Rationale

    Moxatag is an extended release amoxicillin, indicated for once daily dosing. It was studied compared to penicillin dosed four times daily and was shown to be non inferior for bacterial eradication rates (78% and 79.7%, penicillin and Moxatag, respectively).

    Moxatag AWP is $9.37 per tablet. Recommended dose is 1 tab once daily for 10 days. Therefore, a course of Moxatag is in the $90 price range, when amoxicillin provided in multiple daily dosing would be in the $4.00 to $9.00 per course of therapy price range.
